KellerMed Technologies brings more than a decade of experience in performing
data migrations from and to every major PACS.
Customers can contract KellerMed, but typically the PACS ISV's outsource
data migration services to KellerMed in an effort to offer expert migration as
they focus on the PACS implementation. KellerMed Technologies uses the latest
migration tools which are continually enhanced and designed to be robust and
flexible to meet the individual, and sometimes challenging, needs of our
customers.
Having the ability to quickly adapt and customized every migration to adhere
to each customers’ unique requirements, making data migration more of an art
than a science. A successful migration requires experience, flexible software
tools, technical expertise, and well-defined processes. With KellerMed, you
have all of these key elements working together throughout your migration
project.
KellerMed has demonstrated their expertise by partnering with vendors
specialized in maintaining and upgrading migration tools, as rapidly as
possible, while still maintaining the data integrity required for medical
imaging. Learn how KellerMed can customize a migration method that is right for
you.

Primary
Migration Strategies Offered by KellerMed
- DICOM Migration
A DICOM migration is the most common migration performed in the industry.
It is also the most accurate. Using DICOM Query/Retrieve to move the data
from your legacy PACS to your new PACS allows DICOM header information
(from patient merges, edits, etc.) to be updated as the study is migrated
out of the legacy PACS.
KellerMed performs DICOM migrations by ensuring that the retrieval from
the legacy PACS is balanced with the ingestion of the new PACS is
performed at the MAXIMUM rate without impacting the production performance
of either system. Acuo has the tools and expertise to uncover areas that
may hinder the throughput of a migration and can tune the retrieval to
specific hours, or systems as needed.
An KellerMed DICOM Migration is the safest way to move data from one
system to another at a rapid pace. The ability to start a DICOM migration
virtually immediately and allow the ongoing use of the legacy system makes
this the most appropriate strategy for the large majority of customers.
- Media Migration – often referred to as Rapid
Migration
Often Media Migrations can be faster than a standard DICOM migration.
Media migration is often a good choice when the legacy PACS system does
not have efficient Query/Retrieve services. Since some PACS were only
designed to take data in and consideration was never given for the
eventual replacement of the system, engineering into emptying a PACS was
often never done. With a Media migration there is still the ability to
update the data with the accurate data held captive in the legacy PACS
database. KellerMed has performed this data cleansing in conjunction with
updates from the RIS as well.
Media migration will always require data cleansing to assure the file
content is up to date with the PACS database. It may also require more
robust hardware and additional integration time.
- Data Migration Assessment
The best way to understand the condition of your data, the number of
studies and the strategy on how you will resolve the issues found with
your data, is to perform a Data Migration Assessment, often called a
pre-migration assessment. Many customers contract the assessment through
their PACS company or with KellerMed directly to perform the assessment
well in advance of the planned migration. Determining an accurate number
of studies is critical for determining the budget for the migration,
including but not limited to; RIS support for data cleansing, legacy PACS
vendor support, internal staffing needs, storage requirements on the new
archiving system among others. It also helps ensure the proper sizing for
the hardware, network, and VPN is deployed for the migration. The Data
Migration Assessment provides detailed Patient meta-data files allowing
the customer to identify problematic data sets. These problems can be
corrected manually and/or automatically during the migration using KellerMed's
data cleansing tools. Custom reports can also be run; for example, a
report showing the number of studies with no accession number, missing
MRN's or other issues. This service can be provided remotely and in a few
days with the proper IT support.
- Data Migration Archive (DMA)
KellerMed Technologies uses an Acuo Data Migration Archive to provide a
fully DICOM compliant archive that stores migrated studies in a format
that will not require customers to remigrate their data. When KellerMed
Technologies is contracted to perform the migration, there is no cost for
the license of the vendor neutral Data Migration Archive to store migrated
studies in a fully DICOM compliant format. Hardware is provided by customer.
Many customers are “pre-migrating” their legacy archives, one to 2 years
before they plan to replace them. This strategy has them paying for the
migration only once, but enabling the shutdown of the legacy system
shortly after their new system is operational. The DMA can act as the
migration archive for one PACS while being the primary archive for
cardiology or other department. The DMA can also be converted to the
primary archive at some point in the future, such as when the new PACS is
purchased and installed.
